Peter Lawrence Mattei, III

Peter Lawrence Mattei, III passed away at his home in Metairie, LA., on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at the age of 93 with family at his side. Born in New Orleans, LA to the late Peter L. Mattei, Jr. and Emma Vicknair Mattei. He was a graduate of Holy Cross High School, a Navy Reservist, and owner of Delta Auto Wreckers for over seventy years.
Pete was the loving husband of the late Garland Wilson Mattei for 61 years. He often stated, "If God made anyone better, He kept her for Himself. Pete was preceded in death by his son Mark L. Mattei, and his brother and sister-in-law Wade R. Mattei and Janet L. Mattei.
Pete is survived by his son Mitchell C. Mattei (Donna), and his grandsons Brandon T. Mattei (Christina) and Justin Wiggins (Amanda), and great-grandchildren Brylee, Madison, Mackenzie, and Parker.
Referred to as "Hollywood Pete" in the 1960's-1970's during his reign of designing, building, tuning, and driving his front engine AA/Fuel dragsters. He holds the title of being the first person in Louisiana to run in the 7-second ¼ mile at The LaPlace Drag Strip in November of 1964.
Pete really took an interest in traveling the world with his family and friends, having reunions with his extended racing family and race enthusiasts. He looked forward to Harley-Davidson bike nights and meeting "the guys" every Wednesday and Friday for coffee.
He will be deeply missed by family, friends and the many people whose lives he touched.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home, 2706 Williams Blvd., Kenner, LA on Thursday, August 6, 2026 from 4-8 pm.
